Tey

Yannick Antoinette, also known as Tey, was born in France to Mauritian parents in 1995. His father Jean-Francois Antoinette, also known as JF Fly, was a sega singer. As a result, he was always exposed to Mauritian music such as Cassiya, Alain Ramanisum, OSB or Kaya and also some French artists, such as La Fouine, Bouba and Rohff.
As a teenager, he joined the French rap group, with his cousins, XV Balles Hood. In 2011, he came back to Mauritius and was calling himself Youth. Tey started creating and recording his first mixtapes and even performed a few times. He was then spotted by a producer.
In 2014, the Franco-Mauritian signed for three years with the label Five.
This collaboration led to songs like “Bonnto” or “Tout”. His track “A ses côtés” was nominated for The Record of the Year 2018 in Mauritius, followed by “Prend mo lame” in 2019.
Although collaborating with a label comes with a lot of conditions, Tey struggled as he felt like losing his musical identity in order to meet the producer’s expectations or propose marketable creations. But he remained positive, as being part of a label helped him to become more professional as an artist. At the end of his contract, it was a cold shower for Yannick Antoinette and even thought of ending his career. Fortunately for our pleasure, his father persuaded him to pursue his career by taking other opportunities.
His first album “Lerwa” was released on December 30, 2020. Today his single “Perdi Ou Leker” is at 5.8 Million views on YouTube.
