The French Superstar’s Claim to Success

After learning how to DJ at the age of 14, DJ Snake officially withdrew from school one-year later at the age of 15 to focus on music. He began to work at one of Paris’ most famous record stores, which led him to encounter several famous DJs and producers.

After finding his calling, the artist began his producing career in 2009 and, by 2012, received a Grammy nomination for his work as one of the producers on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way album. In 2013, he emerged as an artist in his own right with the release of “Bird Machine” featuring fellow Frenchmen Alesia, which was picked up by Diplo’s Mad Decent label. The infectious smash single combined beckoning bird calls and a smooth kick drum pattern, offering the prime example of DJ Snake’s sparking the 100 BPM trap subgenre. After the record began receiving support from fellow artists, Snake was invited to take over BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Diplo and Friends, his clean mixing and fusion of different genres along with the up-tempo vibe of dance music blowing listeners away.

Since then, the French producer has been one of the most remarkable leaders in EDM’s continued pop dominance. His frenetic hit “Turn Down for What,” featuring Lil Jon, replaced the standard euphoric drop with a wilder, more distorted crescendo reminiscent of trap music. With the release of this track in December 2013, he got a taste of ultimate success, after accumulating more than 800 million views on Youtube, the track was certified as a platinum record in four months.

His next move was unexpected: DJ Snake switched up his style, scoring hits with the blockbuster Major Lazer/MØ collaboration “Lean On”, which foreshadowed pop’s shift away from overheated EDM drops toward cooler house rhythms. In an interview with TIME, the artist Diplo, who wrote the song with Swedish singer, MØ as a slow reggae track, revealed that the track was turned down by both Nicki Minaj and Rihanna before picked by DJ Snake and MØ herself as lead vocalist. The song of course went on to become a global commercial success and one of the most streamed songs of all time on Spotify.

Included on the album were the singles « Middle » featuring guest vocalist Bipolar Sunshine and « Let Me Love You » featuring Justin Bieber. The latter track topped charts and was certified multi-platinum across the globe.

More singles followed, including 2017’s « A Different Way » featuring vocalist Lauv. All his hit singles were included on his full-length album, “Carte Blanche”, which arrived in July 2019 and hit number four on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
