Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske, proud National Geographic explorer and professor of biology at Andrews University in southwest Michigan, lives his lifelong passion for biology. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, he immigrated to the United States with his family as a child. From an early age, his dream of becoming a biologist drove him to explore at every opportunity.

Daniel specialises in mammal ecology and conservation, with a particular interest in how species adjust to their environment, and the impact of habitat changes caused by nature and humans on their behaviour.

From the lush jungles of Honduras to the remote islands of the Cuban archipelago and the depths of Brazil’s upper Amazon, he set out on an impressive quest for a deeper understanding of Sirenians. His explorations led him to encounter a myriad of aquatic oddities, from caimans and piranhas to anacondas.

Odysseo, the first and only oceanarium in Mauritius, stands out as the largest in the Indian Ocean, spanning a total of 5500 m². With 45 different aquatic habitats all under 2000 m3 of crystal-clear water, this oceanarium offers a unique experience. Visitors can explore some 200 species (3500 specimens at opening) from the Indian Ocean. Not only is Odysseo designed to create wonder for visitors, but it also aims to promote awareness and appreciation of the marine world.
