La Citadelle

The Citadel, also known as Fort Adelaide, stands as a cherished treasure of Mauritian heritage, frozen in time. Originating in the 1830s, the fortress was initially constructed by the French and later completed by the English, signifying a historic stronghold that bears witness to bygone eras.

Nestled in the western part of Port Louis, Fort Adelaide takes its name from Queen Adelaide, whose initials adorn the structure of the main entrance to this monument. Perched above sea level, this grand citadel has long functioned to strategically protect the harbour from assaults by adversaries.

The grandeur of the fortress, spanning 150 meters in length and 100 meters in width, showcases sturdy walls made of basaltic stones that have bravely endured the passage of centuries. Additionally, it proudly retains echoes of the past, featuring several cannons meticulously positioned high up on its walls and within the premises.

Today, the gates of the fort welcome visitors, occasionally even for cultural events. The Citadel of Port Louis, much-loved by history enthusiasts, offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of the capital, set against the backdrop of the majestic Montagne des Signaux, the port of Port Louis, and Marie Reine de La Paix.

Adorned with a vast esplanade, wooden gates, and stone walls seamlessly blending with the surrounding nature, La Citadelle metamorphoses into a genuinely enchanting location. Coming to life during specific cultural events, it unveils all its splendour and is unquestionably worth a visit.
