Patyatann, a music project that originated in Mauritius, now unites five exceptionally versatile musicians: Sarasvati Mallac, Anthony Bouic, Kan Chan Kin, Nitish Boojhawon, and Stephan Paul.

The group’s journey commenced in 2012, when they converged to craft a distinctive musical narrative. Their remarkable talent swiftly propelled them onto the global stage, securing them the honour of representing Mauritius at a prestigious international arts event in England, coinciding with the Olympics.

By 2013, they had made a significant impact at the Indian Ocean Music Market (IOMMA) in Réunion, earning third place in the esteemed Indian Ocean Music Awards, marking a historic achievement for a Mauritian ensemble. Their music has garnered acclaim for its originality and innovative flair, enchanting an ever-expanding audience.

In 2016, Patyatann released their inaugural album, “Sanpek,” which achieved tremendous acclaim. This record opened doors to both domestic and international tours, leading them to France and Switzerland in 2018, where their music consistently garnered new admirers.

The name “Patyatan” originates from the Mauritian Creole language and literally translates to “We didn’t anticipate it.” This selection aptly mirrors the exceptional voyage of the band and its distinctive musical genre.

Patyatan’s music draws inspiration from the cultural diversity of Mauritius, fusing components of its traditional musical heritage with influences from the Indian Ocean and beyond. The ensemble skillfully melds musical elements from India, China, Europe, and Africa, thereby mirroring the multicultural essence of Mauritius.

Patyatann is further set apart by their proficiency in a diverse range of traditional Mauritian instruments, including the erhu, bobre, sanza, tabla, didgeridoo, and, naturally, the ravanne.
