Blakkayo Biography

Blakkayo, born Jean Clario Gateaux in 1978, hails from Bois d’Oiseaux, Flacq. In the 1990s, he performed as a dancer which led him to love music, specifically reggae music. While listening to Kaya’s seggae, a fusion of Mauritian sega and reggae, made him realise that he can use music to share his belief and help people see who and what are the reals. He even wrote his own lyrics which led to freestyle music.

Blakkayo has a vision to keep the Mauritian Culture and music alive by creating and promoting reggae, seggae and dancehall music. Since the day he started singing, either with the OSB crew or by his own, his only motive is to show the world the real Mauritius, the reality of the island behind all the fake world they show on the net. He believes that the island is not yet free, we are still not a democratic country, even though we show that we are, which is indeed a fact.

In the 2000, his first album came out, Tchek to Life. The album was a revolutionary release after the riots on the island that year, which led to success for Blakkayo. The next year he joined hands with the OSB crew and brought to life a new album called Nou Kkila, where they sang for the tribute of Kaya.

The crew and Blakkayo, OSB crew, continued performing for years till they made it to the international level and launched their last album, “Activist”. He then moved to a new group, Solda Kaz Bad where he was the head of the group among young musicians.

Blakkayo has enriched his musical catalog by releasing four remarkable albums: “Tchek To Life” in 2000, “Exterminator” in 2003, “Love N Respect” in 2009, and “Soz Seryer” in 2021. These four albums continue to resonate with multiple generations of fans, underscoring their timeless appeal.

Through his solo albums, Blakkayo has garnered valuable wisdom, enabling him to transcend his artistry and deliver his very best. Concurrently, his determination to advocate for justice, love, peace, and freedom has grown stronger, providing him with the resilience needed to uphold his commitment with unwavering vigor.
