Zulu
Born in 1964, Michel Bavajee, better known as Zulu, carries a rich musical journey marked by passion and authenticity. Nicknamed Zulu due to his distinct skin tone compared to his siblings, his artistic spirit was kindled during his teenage years.
At 14, he graced the stage, interpreting John Denver’s « Leaving on the Jet Plane ». This sparked his fascination with the guitar, prompting him to join Gérard Seeta Ramdoo’s group at 16. However, the quest for genuine musical expression eventually led him to part ways. Recognition followed when he participated in the Star Show, captivating all the jurors with his rendition of Charles Aznavour’s « La Bohème ».
In 2008, Zulu, alongside Lionel Permal, co-founded the band Blackmen Bluz, leaving an indelible mark with hits like « Gabriella » and « Tir Bousson » However, the band disbanded in 2012, prompting Zulu to embark on a solo career. His debut album « ZULU » in 2013 featured the acclaimed track ‘Metisse,’ a collaboration with Mario Ramsamy, voted song of the year by Radio One.
Despite facing financial hurdles, Zulu’s resilience shone through with subsequent albums – « Intimiste » in 2016 and « Tango Bluz » in 2018, captivating the Mauritian audience. Staying true to his origins, Zulu, a highly sought-after artist, maintains a deep connection with his roots. Finding solace in the sea, he persists in taking his boat on fishing trip even after grand concert performances.
