Cassiya started out as a band in the 1990s and captured the hearts of many Mauritians with their hits. With several albums in their discography, they gained popularity quite quickly with the locals. The influence of the band Cassiya was not limited to only Mauritius, they also influenced sega musicians from the Reunion Island too.
The founding members of the Cassiya Roots are Gérard Louis, Alain Ramanisum, Alain Lafleur, Jean Claude Fanfan and Bruno François. They decided to join together by revamping the name of the band ‘ Cassiya’ into ‘Cassiya Roots’ along with a new mission, which is to perform some of their all time favourite hits for their fans.
Cassiya released numerous albums during their time together, and they had a number of singles, including “Jouni Jouna,” “Marlène,” and “Ctyombo li”. They produced several albums that talk about patriotism, cruelty and Africanacity which are still played in Mauritian homes years after the band split up.
The band name ‘Cassiya’ originates from the name ‘Cassis’ which is a town in Mauritius where members of the band were brought up and spent most of their childhood dreaming about making music. The name was suggested by 16 year old Alain Ramanisum while brainstorming for a suitable name for the promotion of the musical band.
They are renowned artists who have made several generations dance for years.
