The Babani Crew
Often dubbed as one of the most prolific DJ crew of Mauritius, Babani Soundsystem started out on the Mauritian stages in 2017. Their music is deeply reminiscent of the sound of the island, the band approaches music through traditional rhythms, electronic influences and works on constantly evolving and reshaping their musical landscape.
Babani Soundsystem accounts for 5 members, 4 in Mauritius and 1 in Amsterdam. Avneesh, Ayef, Gary Mach and Woréka are based in Mauritius while Daniel Monaco is based in Amsterdam. Babani Soundsystem uses a mix of traditional instruments and synthesizers and samplers all while projecting images from their universe.
Their mission is to restore the value of the music of the Indian Ocean. Babani Soundsystem also gives a new twist to the ‘séga typique’ by adding a touch of modernity and electronic music to it. Each member of the group brings their own unique touch and influence to their music. The bond between the members is without doubt due the local music and the mix that represents the image of Mauritius.
Babani Soundsystem is no stranger to Mauritians festivals. Having performed at Dreamers 8, Nou Le Morne, le Kaz’Out, The Primative O in Mauritius and also at Réunion à la Cité des Arts in Reunion Island, Babani Soundsystem released their first single in 2020 titled Zistwar Fer Per. The single received many positive reviews and was also featured in Mixmag Asia’s Musical Pearls of 2020.
