Tey
Yannick Antoinette, also known as Tey, was born in France in 1995 to Mauritian parents. His father, Jean-Francois Antoinette, who is also known as JF Fly, was a sega singer.
Growing up, Tey was exposed to a mix of Mauritian music from artists like Cassiya, Alain Ramanisum, OSB, and Kaya, as well as French artists such as La Fouine, Booba, and Rohff.
During his teenage years, Tey joined the French rap group XV Balles Hood, alongside his cousins. In 2011, he returned to Mauritius and began creating and recording his first mixtapes and performed on a few occasions.
In 2014, the Franco-Mauritian artist signed a three-year contract with the label Five, resulting in hit songs like “Bonnto” and “Tout.” His track “A ses côtés” was nominated for The Record of the Year in Mauritius in 2018, followed by “Prend mo lame” in 2019.
While working with a label brought certain constraints, Tey faced the challenge of maintaining his musical identity while meeting the producer’s expectations and creating commercially viable music.
Despite these struggles, Tey remained positive, acknowledging that being part of a label helped him grow professionally as an artist. After the contract ended, he contemplated ending his career, but his father encouraged him to explore other opportunities, keeping his musical journey alive.
On December 30, 2020, Tey released his first album, “Lerwa.” Today, his single “Perdi Ou Leker” has garnered an impressive 5.8 million views on YouTube, marking his continued success in the music industry.
